Micro-fonos

(2002)

Some years ago, as I was talking with a good friend about many things of common interest, we stumbled upon the subject of music written for guitar. One of the things we observed was that, while many composers had explored new tunings, harmonies and playing techniques, most pieces written for guitar seemed to be “tuned” in “Guitar Major”. It was with this in mind that I went on to write Micro-fonos.

The entire piece is built around a mechanical device that modifies both the sonority of the instrument—by imposing on the strings oscillations that are within the threshold of rhythm and sound—and the playing technique.

The piece is unusual within the framework of my own work in two respects: One, the overall form of the piece is cyclical, open and potentially infinite, making its duration extremely variable. Second, the evolution of the piece is governed by a game that the musicians must play as they play the music.
